A man playing the tuba marched in the King’s Parade in Mobile, Alabama, while ladies of the royal court of the Mobile Carnival Association watched from a viewing tent on the sidelines. Mobile has been celebrating Mardi Gras long before there even was a New Orleans. The Southern city’s Carnival — which dates back to 1703, making it the oldest in America — begins in November and stretches on for months. This year, 72 participating organizations, called mystic societies, celebrated. With no governing body, each organization sets up its own parade, applies for permits, and builds or rents its floats. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @damonwinter captured this scene while on #nytassignment in Alabama. We’ll be sharing more of @damonwinter’s photos from the 5 days he spent covering #MardiGras in Mobile.
