Mobile, Alabama dates its Mardi Gras back to 1703 — that’s 15 years before New Orleans was founded. Mobile’s Carnival, the oldest in America, is largely organized by groups called mystic societies. The first societies were formed in the 1830s, but it was 1894 before the African-American community got its own group. Today, membership rules vary. Members need to be born into some societies; other groups invite residents to join, and still others accept anyone who pays the dues. The Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association, a former president says, was started by African-American businessmen to provide cultural and educational activities for black residents and show them what they could achieve through education. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @damonwinter took this photo at the group’s Grand Marshals Ball. We’ll be sharing more of @damonwinter’s photos from the 5 days he spent covering #MardiGras in Mobile.
