“Surfing describes a society, and the people in it…It has that epic nature, that sublime nature, that almost asks you to reproduce it full sized on the wall", says the artist Raymond Pettibon, who lives and works in Southern #California. His ink, acrylic and watercolour on paper, Untitled (2000), presents a metaphor for the individual versus society: the small thrill seeker riding the impressive #wave is a scene of humanity facing the vastness of #nature. It is inevitable that the surfer’s glorious triumph is transitory, as fate hovers just beyond the frame, and the eventual crash of the wave will engulf him.
