Black Lace: Alexander Calder’s monumental hanging mobile bears witness to the artist’s career-defining friendship with Brazilian architect Henrique Mindlin. The pair first met in New York in 1944, and forged a personal and professional relationship that would span several decades. Determined to bring Calder’s work to a wider audience, during the artist’s visit to #Brazil in 1948, Mindlin curated a landmark exhibition of Calder’s work in the country. Over the coming years, Mindlin was successful in positioning Calder’s work in the collections of the Brazilian cultural elite. This work was acquired directly from Mindlin in 1959 has remained in the same collection ever since.
