Born in Los Angeles in 1982, @AlexIsrael’s practice is utterly entrenched within the silver screen myths, celebrity hinterland, and dream factory that is #Hollywood. Forming part of his series of emblematic self-portraits first unveiled @PeresProjects in Berlin in 2013, the fibreglass work depicts a pared-back image of the artist in profile wearing the archetypal Freeway 10 sunglasses of his own design. The effect is unmistakably Pop in aesthetic: #AlexIsrael has transformed his likeness into a memorable commercial icon that bespeaks the glamorous and sunny idealism of #LA life. Picking up the legacy of Andy Warhol and latterly Jeff Koons, the artist carefully walks an ambiguous line between cynical critic and earnest fan.
