Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Red squirrel in snow – There are a great many species in the UK, major icons of our natural world, where my photographic coverage of them could best be classed as woeful. Whilst to date I have exactly zero images of pine martens my coverage of red squirrels is not a whole lot better and my images of them in snow consist largely of images captured during one morning at a paid-for site in the Cairngorms National Park. When I travel to the same area in January 2017 for a month of mountain hare indulgence then, should the opportunity arise, I will definitely be looking to add to my paltry collection. As I’ve mentioned previously I’m not a massive fan of paid-for sites, not for any great ethical reason but simply because of the homogeny of certain aspects of UK wildlife photography. Fixed hides means fixed shooting positions and as someone who always strives to produce unique and credible bodies of work the sameness of the images that are often produced at these locales means that they usually don’t interest me that much. The single best thing about this particular site is that I’m able to be outside, with the squirrels all around me, and so I have greater control over my perspective and shooting direction. This is very much a straightforward portrait but I at least like the detail in the claws and like all images captured in snow the reflected light gives the little squizza a lovely even tone. In terms of exposing correctly in this particular circumstance I primarily used aperture priority, over exposing by about +⅔-+1, as the squirrels were moving quickly between areas of variable light fall. As such this constantly changing light would have made shooting on manual an absolute nightmare so there are occasional circumstances where I’ll have to trust my slightly dim-witted camera to get the exposure somewhere near correct.
