For years I have tried to get to this remote Falkland Island, home to nearly half a million of these magnificent seabirds, the largest such colony in the world, stretching 3 miles long. In the persistent winds of the Falklands, albatross don't need a runway; they simply hold out their long wings, made for soaring, and easily lift off. The good news is that after some decline in their numbers, these albatross are increasing again in the Falklands. Long may they soar.
