Photo by @rezaphotography // Mysterious Tanis #Egypt, #Tanis I was on assignment for National Geographic on Nile Delta. In the heart of the Nile Delta, minutes away from the village of Sân-el-Hagar, an amazing mass of columns, obelisks, blocks, and statues appears... Excavated from the soil, and brought out of oblivion over some two centuries by archaeologists, these remains attest to the former grandeur of Tanis, a city we are reminded of in the Bible, and which had been the capital of Egypt at the beginning of the first millennium B.C. Tanis had been abandoned to the tumult of winds for a long time, with its treasures buried under dark hills (tells or kôms). But from the 18th century, archaeologists started thinking it might have been the famous city of Ramses II, Pi-Ramses, and thus several expeditions were initiated. Although this theory was later dismissed, the interest surrounding this site remains. Each excavation campaign - nowadays directed by Frenchman Philippe Brissaud - reveals many treasures. Many of them are exhibited in the world's great museums. Even though the mysteries of this Pharaonic city are yet to be unveiled - such as the strange ritual still performed on the site today by local women - Tanis appears to be a true "Thebes of the North". Reza takes us there for a stroll in his report.
