Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Bengal tiger yawning – This image was taken on my very first trip to India’s Bandhavgarh National Park and it shows a 19 month old sub-adult. Young tigers usually stay with their mother until about 24 months but this one, and its sibling, suddenly appeared out of the forest just as we were passing in our jeep. I was in my usual position, standing at the back of the jeep as this not only gives me a better vantage point but it also a more comfortable way to travel, my legs acting as shock absorbers as we move constantly over uneven ground. We had almost passed by them and had we been just seconds earlier we’d never have enjoyed the 45 minutes that we did have with them, completely on our own and with the two tigers completely at ease. In this image one of the tigers had settled down on a slightly elevated rock right next to the track so it was nice to be able to capture some really intimate images. When a tiger yawns like this you can really see the truly carnivorous make-up of their teeth and even the rough ridges on the tongue and to date this remains probably the closest that I’ve ever been to these simply astonishingly beautiful creatures. That they are as imperilled as they are is a damning indictment of humanity’s breath-taking stupidity, selfishness and incompetence and it seems that things are not going to improve anytime soon. What’s most frustrating is that these cats, like all cats, can increase their population very quickly if they are just given the chance but with just a tiny pocket of Indian forest in which to live, and no natural corridors for them to disperse to new areas, their continued existence remains depressingly uncertain.
