Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan in threat posture – Photographing birds and mammals using backlighting can be quite a challenging task to undertake. Most difficult I find is trying to ensure that the lens element is properly shaded from the sun, otherwise you can start to get unsightly lens flare creeping across the image. Once you’ve managed to solve that quandary it’s then a case, at this site at least, of trying to ascertain when and where the most dramatic and the most pleasing effect can be produced. On this lake there is only a very narrow area where both the light, and a distraction-less background, coalesce to produce the most visually effective result. Furthermore the swan always needs to be at a specific angle and this I’ve learnt, as with every other aspect of photography, simply through exhaustive trial and error. If this swan turns slightly toward me then I start to lose the reflected light on the back of its neck and its tail feathers start to lose some of their translucent quality, both of which has a significant negative effect on the resulting image. This again of course is yet another reason why working close to home is so beneficial to one’s own photographic development as all of these lessons can be taken further afield and with other species and other lighting conditions. I also shoot scenarios such as this on manual exposure as the swans distance to me is constantly fluctuating meaning that the swans size in the image fluctuates also. As such on aperture priority this is going to give me varying exposure suggestions due to the changing levels of light and dark in the image. I also tend to expose so that I retain detail in all of the whites as allowing the whites to burn out on the fringes of the swan can make the image feel a little harsh to look at.
