Photo by Stephanie Sinclair @stephsinclairpix @tooyoungtowed // A young girl in the Masanga community of Sierra Leone attends an alternative Bondo ceremony that does not include female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C), offered by the Swiss civil society organization Masanga Education and Assistance (meamasanga.org), which offers education to children in the community. Bondo ceremonies serve as highly-regarded rites of passage for Sierra Leonean girls as they enter adulthood and thus secret all-women communities, but decoupling FGM/C from the girls’ ceremonies has allowed the community to continue to practice some of their traditions without harming their physical and mental health. During the Bondo ritual, girls can spend up to a month in the bush learning skills from how to be a good wife and mother to successful member of society. Over the past year, I was honored with telling the photographic stories of the world's most vulnerable girls for the latest @ナショナルジオグラフィック story 'The Dangerous Lives of Girls,' published online recently and in the special January 2017 print edition of the magazine which focuses on gender issues.
