It is the time of rebirth and renewal in the ethnic quarter of the Hazaras, on Navrouz, this new year’s day which is celebrated on March 21 in Afghanistan, a remnant of Zoroastrian tradition which remains intact in Central Asia, Iran and India. The crowds are out en masse, the city is animated, and the ambiance is festive, an air of liberty even. As proof, I wish to capture these young girls who are laughing joyously in mid-flight on their swings, soaring above the young, happy crowd. Against all odds, and despite the ever-lurking danger of the return of the Taliban, and the bogged-down forces of the Coalition, which has resulted in an overall loss of confidence among the population, I remain convinced that this remains a moment when seeds of hope were planted, during these years of reconstruction and relative freedom.
