Why are these statues wearing hats and scarves? Once upon a time, a kind old man thought the statues would feel cold, so put hats on their heads to protect them from the chill. The statues were grateful, and one night visited the old man at home, bringing him gifts and good things. And that is how the custom began. A Buddhist tale, but just right for Christmas! :) The statues are at the Kokujoji Temple 国上寺 in Tsubame-Sanjo, in Niigata Prefecture. The town is home to scenic parks and shrines, which saw visitors (including us!) despite the freezing rain. Uploaded some of my photos over on my Facebook page.
