@danielberehulak photographed Roel Scott, 13, inspecting the bloodied spot where his uncle, Joselito Jumaquio, 52, was killed by the police in Manila. Roel said he was playing video games with his uncle, a pedicab driver who had surrendered himself to the authorities, when 15 masked men descended quickly and silently over the shantytown called Pandacan. Witnesses said the men dragged Joselito down an alley and shouted at neighbors to go back into their homes and turn the lights off. They heard a woman shout, “Nanlaban!” (“He’s fighting it out.”) 2 shots rang out. Then 4 more. When it was quiet, the neighbors found Joselito’s bloodied body with a gun and a plastic bag of shabu — what Filipinos call methamphetamine — next to his handcuffed hands. The police report called it a “buy-bust operation.” @danielberehulak documented 57 homicide victims over 35 days in the #Philippines.
