The choreographer Reggie Wilson is always thinking about the writer Zora Neale Hurston. (“Nonstop,” as he put it.) Other African-American artists and writers like James Baldwin moved to France to escape racism, but Zora stayed in America. In his latest work, “Citizen,” #ReggieWilson uses gestural solos to explore this idea of belonging. He worked one-on-one with his dancers, including @brownyeman, to create a work that he said is “just lathered with repetition” — and speed. In “Citizen,” @brownyeman flies through a labyrinth of lightning-fast arm and foot movements. All the while, he’s trying not to get too far ahead of himself, he told the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter @giadk, “because if I do I’ll trip all over.” He likens the performance, which takes place on 2 intersecting diagonals, to being in a video game: “The floor might slip or the light might blind you,” he said, but you have to “roll with that punch and be ready to achieve the action in order to win the game — or to get to the end.” @migeophoto photographed @brownyeman at @bam_brooklyn.
