Bookshelves stretch up the walls of the double-height atrium, and a curving staircase leads to the second-floor gallery, making El Péndulo (@cafebreriaelpendulo) feel more like a library than a store and creating the feeling that you’re there to read as much as to shop. Located in the upscale district of Polanco in Mexico City, this “cafebrería” (a fusion of “cafe” and “librería”) has simple, calming decor: wooden floors, teal paintwork and a corrugated PVC roof that fills the shop with natural light. And that’s not to mention its offerings. As one fan observed, the shop’s careful selections are a sign that “the people behind the bookstore are readers reaching readers.” @adrianazehbrauskas photographed @cafebreriaelpendulo — one of 8 bookstores that @nytimestravel designated as a destination in and of itself — while on #nytassignment in Mexico City.
