A woman read a newspaper at a cafe in Kidlington, a sleepy English village about 5 miles north of Oxford. This summer, busloads of Chinese tourists began arriving in Kidlington. Since then, the village’s 13,723 residents have been variously baffled, annoyed and delighted. The groups ignore the village’s 13th-century church and its thatched-roof cottages. Instead, one tourist asked a stunned resident if he could help mow her lawn. (She politely declined.) Another jumped joyously on a child’s trampoline in the front yard. A slice of middle England, Kidlington boasts a public library, 7 pubs, 2 cafes, 4 restaurants, a shopping street with a @Domino's Pizza outlet, an immigration detention center and a Baptist church. Now, it’s also home to a national mystery. @thesun suggested that supernatural forces had delivered the Chinese to Kidlington. Others wonder if a tour guide mistakenly called it Harry Potter’s home. The logical answer: a tour guide with Beijing Hua Yuan International Travel said that when tourists don’t want to pay an extra $68 for an optional Chinese language tour of nearby Blenheim Palace, Winston Churchill’s majestic ancestral home, guides leave them in Kidlington.
