How often do you read the words “romance” and “air travel” in the same sentence? Not often. But just as @grandcentralnyc still conjures the majesty of transcontinental train service in a commuter rail age, the Trans World Flight Center at New York’s Kennedy International Airport continues to evoke the romance of air travel. “For that alone,” writes @ニューヨーク・タイムズ columnist David W. Dunlap, “it is irreplaceable.” The building, designed by the architect Eero Saarinen, opened in 1962. For one brief shining moment, it was an embodiment of the jet age. There was just one problem. “It was functionally obsolete the day it opened,” said Tyler Morse, the chief executive and managing partner of MCR Development. The flight center’s check-in and baggage-handling capacities were soon overwhelmed by Boeing 747s. It closed in 2001 and has stood largely empty ever since. But now, MCR Development wants to revive it with a $265 million hotel project. @angelfranco_nyt photographed one of 2 luminous tubes that once guided passengers to their aircraft. If the plans go through, the tubes would be used to connect the flight center, the TWA Hotel buildings and Terminal 5. #✈️
