Billie LaVerne Smith (Ms. District of Columbia) backstage at the 2016 Ms. Senior America Pageant at the @resortscasino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. What makes a woman over 60 participate in a beauty pageant, especially if she has no previous pageant experience? Why spend $1,550 in fees — which includes food and lodging but doesn’t cover the requisite gowns, costumes or jewelry? For some, it was simply a lark. For others, it was about self-expression, or healing. The pageant “revives you,” said Trina Schelton (Ms. Mississippi), a songwriter who once owned a Nashville recording studio. “I love singing, I love performing, but there was no real outlet for it. I had sort of given up. I think a lot of ladies my age do.” Visit the link in our profile to see more of @rogerkisby’s photos from Ms. Senior America, a pageant that celebrates women of a certain age — “between 60 and death,” one contestant joked. #?
