Puffin in coastal thrift – Often times with photography I will go out with a specific image in mind or I will be looking to produce an image that communicates a particular message. These pre-planned shoots however tend to happen closer to home where I am extremely familiar with the species, the location and I would probably be working on a photo story for one publication or another. On other occasions, usually when I am away from home, my photography is a lot more reactive, less planned and it’s often down to serendipity as to how things play out. This was the circumstance behind this image when I was working #onassignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック in the Shetland Islands. I was in Hermaness National Nature Reserve on the northernmost island of Unst which, to me at least, is arguably the most spectacular location for wildlife photography in the UK. The puffins were in on that day and the cliffs were covered with these spectacular and charismatic birds. As clichéd as it undoubtedly is I decided to focus my attention on the rich purple hues of some coastal thrift. Puffins have beautifully coloured bills and this seemed like the ideal opportunity to echo the colourful nature of the puffin with its surroundings. As well as the purple thrift I was also able to include the yellow of some lichen encrusted rocks, all set against the deep blue of the North Atlantic.
