Though the Canyon is a destination for nearly 5 million visitors each year, there are 1.78 million acres of land surrounding the park that are currently under threat from uranium mining companies and other developers. Legislation for a proposed monument: The Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument has been proposed by Arizona Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D) and Havasupai, Hualapai, and Hopi tribal leaders. Unfortunately, we are running out of time before President Obama can sign this piece of legislation and, if his word is to be believed, we cannot rely on President-Elect Trump to support protections for the environment.
