When rugby was first introduced to France circa 1880, it was primarily played by members of the upper classes – but by 1917 it started to gain a more widespread popularity in the country. Like many of his contemporaries such as Robert Delaunay, Albert Gleizes, and Fernand Léger, Andre Lhote sought to capture the vibrancy of modern life in his art, and rugby offered an exciting new lens to accomplish this.
Les Rugbymen, painted circa 1920, will be offered in our Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale on 17 November at Christie's New York.
