Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety This is an image from my recent 3 year project working with mute swans. It was captured one morning at dawn as the swan and her two cygnets glided into a pool of sunlight filtering through the trees. Photographically speaking exposing for high contrast situations such as these can be quite tricky, especially as it’s a white sunlit bird against a shadowed forested backdrop. My priority was to expose correctly for the adult swan, thereby retaining all of the detail in her plumage, and so I’d already set my exposure on my camera manually, overriding the automatic settings. This way, whether a tiny part of the swan was in the sunlight, or the whole bird was sunlit then my exposure would be correct whereas, had I left it to the camera to decide, on aperture priority as an example then the results would have varied dramatically. The limitations of this technique meant however that I had to commit to only photograph the swan when it passed through a pool of sunlight but I was out at dawn for this light anyway so it really wasn’t much of a compromise. It’s worth noting as well that the cygnets, as they are a little darker, typically require about ⅔ more exposure and so if I was shooting the adult swan at 1/800sec then I’d need to shoot the cygnets at 1/500sec. In this image the priority was to get the correct exposure for the adult swan and so I had to let the cygnet fall into a little underexposure but this was preferable to exposing for the cygnet and letting some of the whites of the swan burn out. I can only apologise to non-photographers reading that but if you do struggle to get to sleep tonight then just re-read it and you’ll be out like a light!
