A great crested grebe in pre-dawn mist - As a wildlife photographer it is all too easy to become a little too fixated on certain aspects of image making. I am someone for example who places a great deal of importance on the quality of light but equally I can see tremendous merit in all kinds of weather conditions, whether it is overcast light, torrential rain, driving snow or thick mist. In the early mornings at my various lake sites I always time my arrival to be about an hour before sunrise so that I have an opportunity to explore the possibilities in the pre-dawn gloom. This of course doesn’t always work out as sometimes the mist is so thick that images simply end up looking like they’ve been taken through dirty glass! On other occasions however, when a few of the necessary elements serendipitously collide such as the right type of mist as well as a confiding bird the results can be well worth the extra effort. This image, and the other images captured during that brief window, are completely unique among all of my work with grebes simply because of the rich blue hue of the mist. Much the same as the pinkish afterglow that occurs after sunset it’s always worth remembering to either get out earlier, or stay out later and not to limit one’s photography simply to times between sunrise and sunset.
