Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety As winter approaches in the UK so does the distinct possibility that we’ll see the arrival some beautiful winter visitors, the Bohemian waxwing. These birds are given their ‘Bohemian’ moniker due to the unpredictable movement of their flocks as they cross the North Sea in search of food. They do this when unusually harsh winters in their Scandinavian breeding grounds limit the availability of food and it is during these times when we are most likely to see them. This image was taken not far from where I live one year when I made a concerted effort to capture some images of them. I’d spent the day with them as they fed in a yellow rowan tree and whilst those images were nice enough it was when a small part of the flock gathered on the house aerial that I was able to produce something a little more unusual. Yet again with my work it was serendipity that allowed me to capture my most interesting image of these stunning birds. It goes without saying that I’d invested the time by spending a few days with them and of course I had all of the technical knowledge to execute the image when the opportunity presented but it was still good old fashioned luck and the beauty of mother nature that ultimately delivered that day. This is why I will always tip my hat to the presence of luck in every single one of my images because none of them would exist without it. Last little interesting fact about the waxwing is that, even though you can’t see them in this image, each bird has a little red tip on the end of each wing that looks like it has been dipped in wax!
