On a recent flight from Oakland, California to Seattle, Washington, the Southwest jet flew straight up the subduction zone separating the Pacific tectonic plate and the North American plate. Passengers looking out the windows on the right side of the plane were treated to a daisy chain of the Cascade volcanoes. These volcanoes included Mt. St. Helens, which erupted on May 18, 1980, and Mt. Rainier just east of Seattle. At the southern end of the chain lies Crater Lake, which erupted about 7700 years ago. But wait! There’s more! Wizard Island is a volcanic cinder cone which forms an island at the west end of Crater Lake in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. The top of the island reaches 6,933 feet above sea level, about 755 feet (230 m) above the average surface of the lake. The cone is capped by a volcanic crater about 500 feet wide and 100 feet (30 m) deep. If you are as crazy about volcanoes as I am, seeing Crater Lake and Wizard Island from 30,000 feet was a real treat. This freeze frame is part of a video shot with a Lumix GX-85 camera. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #Crater Lake #the Cascade Volcanoes.
