Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Grey heron walking on water – A few years ago (2011) this image won the Animal Behaviour category in the British Wildlife Photography Awards yet it is an image of which I’ve never been that keen. Of course, for me to enter it into a competition in the first place obviously meant that I was able to recognise that it had some qualities but there are numerous thigs about it of which I am not so fond. First of all is it lacks critical sharpness in the eye which, given that it’s photographed at 1/800sec is careless in the extreme and I still can’t quite work out to this day how or why that happened. Secondly I dislike the heron’s central placement in the frame which again rankles with me somewhat but I do remember that the curse of adrenaline was rearing its inconvenient head at the time. Lastly it is the direction of the light which is coming from the right hand side of the frame and as such the most important part of the bird, the bit with the fish in its’ gob, is in shadow. I don’t wish to appear overly critical or ungrateful here but honesty is a fundamental in all of my work and I have no interest in misleading or talking dishonestly about my work. I am of course grateful that this image won a prestigious award but equally I always see the value in scrutinising one’s own work as it is how we can move ourselves forward and strive to produce work of a higher and higher standard. If I were to mark myself on this image it would read much like my old school reports; ‘could do better’. Nevertheless I’d still really appreciate it if you #followme at @andyparkinsonphoto to keep up-to-date with my images @andyparkinsonphoto @thephotosociety @natgeo @natgeocreative #greyheron #freeyourthinking #educateandinspire #phototips #ethicsbeforeimages #nature #naturelovers #wildlifephotography
