On March 22, Q-Tip (@qtiptheabstract) and Phife Dawg (@iamthephifer) were talking on the phone. The 2 rappers — lifelong friends and half of A Tribe Called Quest (@atcq) — were discussing a project: a new Tribe album, group’s first in 18 years. Their conversation ended around 4 a.m. 19 hours later, Phife’s manager called. @iamthephifer had died of complications from diabetes. He was 45. Since 1990, @iamthephifer had been dutifully managing life with Type 2 diabetes. In the late 1990s, @atcq broke up, but @iamthephifer repeatedly asked about making another group album. When the group performed on @fallontonight about a year ago to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its debut album, @qtiptheabstract said: “Let’s just do an album! Let’s just start tomorrow!” @iamthephifer’s coaxing finally came to fruition. Next Friday @atcq releases “We Got It From Here, Thank You for Your Service,” its 6th and final album. The title is the one @iamthephifer wanted. What does it mean? “I don’t know,” @qtiptheabstract said. “We’re just going with it because he liked it.” @chadbatka photographed @qtiptheabstract, right, with @jarobiwhite, another member of @atcq.
