A day in the life of a student at the @midland_school looks a bit like that of many other #privateschool students. But on a recent Sunday morning, a group of teenagers set out to gather a week’s worth of firewood. Later, another group of students chopped some of it. Then, at the appointed shower hour, a third group built fires to heat the water tanks. The cost for such an education: $49,900 for one year’s room and board in unheated cabins in the hills above Santa Barbara, California, and a shot at @stanford and @harvard. Staggering as that price is, it’d be a whole lot more if the students didn’t practically run the place. In 1932, the school’s founder declared that he wanted to create an institution free of the clutter that comes from affluence. The modern era has complicated his ideals somewhat: Phones are confiscated, but the outside world still intervenes via @Amazon. @melissalyttle photographed 14-year-old Jamie Borghesani with a bass in a hammock on the grounds of the @midland_school.
