@joshhaner took this #aerial photo of the cookie-cutter rows of small concrete-block houses that compose Miaomiao Lake Village. The Chinese government has resettled 7,000 Hui Muslims here from their water-scarce lands in the country’s northwest. China calls them “ecological migrants”: people whom the government has relocated from lands distressed by #climatechange, industrialization, poor policies and human activity. Government officials claim places like Miaomiao Lake are an improvement because they’re closer to highways; to Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region; and to the Yellow River, a major water source that helped give birth to Chinese civilization. But the resettled people, who once herded sheep and goats over expansive hills, say they now feel like penned-in animals, listless and uncertain of their future.
