30 years ago, @jeffreyhensonscales moved to the #Harlem block where he still lives today with his wife and their daughter. “It was a rugged time during the 1980s,” he writes, “with blocks of abandoned buildings as a backdrop to the virulent crack wave that left a trail of human and physical devastation in its wake.” He started by documenting the streets. But soon, @jeffreyhensonscales — who’s also a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photo editor — stepped inside. For the next 5 years, he photographed House’s Barber Shop, where he took this photo of Mr. Ben, one of the barbers. Today, the barber shop is a 24-hour T-shirt and tube-sock store. “But hopefully these photographs will give people a look back at the Harlem of the 1980s,” @jeffreyhensonscales writes, “and of House’s Barber Shop, a place whose mirrors reflected the styles, stories and memories from a community that has always represented a vital intersection of the traditions of masculinity and the cultural history of black people in America.” Visit the link in our profile to see more photos from this Harlem #barbershop on the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #lensblog.
