Carla D. Hayden is the first woman and first African-American to serve as the librarian of Congress (@librarycongress). Day to day, she works out of an office in the James Madison Memorial Building, across the street from the main library. But her ceremonial office, where she was photographed by @lexey, inspires her. The safe in the office once contained the things President Abraham Lincoln was carrying the night he was assassinated — including his glasses and a pocket knife. Outside, Carla's name has been chiseled into a wall. As one administration ends and power brokers prepare to give up their coveted territory, we photographed the inner sanctums where history lives and business gets done. Visit the link in our profile to look into more offices.
