It’s been more than 4 months since Omar Mateen gunned down 49 people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando. That evening, Officer Gerry Realin, pictured here, spent hours inside identifying and tallying the dead. Today, everything from Sharpies to face masks to San Francisco 49ers jerseys set off his panic. Sharpies because the authorities used them to write the victims’ names on a board. Masks because he wore one that day to keep blood off his face. 49 because that’s the number of people who were killed. There is no way to measure the trauma and grief that victims of horrific mass shootings must live with. But while compensation programs can help victims find their way back, it’s often less clear what help is available for the people who are the first to respond. @eve_edelheit photographed Officer Realin, who hasn’t been on the job since June 28, trying to catch fish with a net while kayaking in Edgewater, Florida.
