Ma Xinli, 9, jumped rope in Miaomiao Lake Village. Xinli’s family was relocated to the village from their home in Xihaigu, a parched area in China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The Mas were among some 7,000 Hui Muslims, “ecological migrants” whom the #Chinese government brought to Miaomiao Lake, which was built specifically to house them. Officials promised themthey’d get rich. Instead, people who once herded sheep and goats over expansive hills now feel like penned-in animals. The size of each family’s yard plot is about 150 square meters, or 1,600 square feet. Many residents complain about the cramped quarters and lack of farmland and jobs. While most relocation villages like Miaomiao Lake have an elementary school, a market area and mosques, they seem more like refugee camps than organic communities.
