Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety This was my first real experience with a wild tiger. It was 2006 and we were exploring Chakradara meadow in Bandhavgarh National Park in India. We knew that at the time that the meadow territory was home to an adult female with 4 sub-adult offspring which, at aged 24 months really should have been independent. Nevertheless, as their mum continued to provide food for them they continued to overstay their welcome. One day as we were travelling slowly through the meadow we passed a small ditch and out of the corner of my eye I noticed something hidden deep in the grass at the far end. As we backed the jeep up to take a close look we could just make out the distinctive pattern of a concealed tiger, a tiger that at the time we knew only as P10 but who would later grow up to become Shashi. Shashi was an absolutely enormous tiger, the biggest of all the siblings and after being involved in the killing of his own father, legendary tiger B2/Sundar he became the dominant force in Bandhavgarh right up until May of this year when he sadly passed away. After some time just watching the magnificent male Shashi simply rose to his feet and then walked straight down the ditch, straight toward where our jeep sat. He just kept coming, closer and closer and with plenty of room all around us we knew it best just to remain still, the engine off. Closer and closer he came until he filled the frame, then only bits of him filled the frame and to this day it remains one of my most thrilling wildlife encounters. Heartbreakingly for my uncle though his camera failed at the very moment that Shashi rose to his feet, and then restarted again the moment that he melted into the grass on the other side, probably the single worst piece of luck that I’ve ever witnessed in all of my time in nature.
