Photograph taken by @christianziegler // This female bonobo’s lips are stained with red clay – they eat clay to help them digest unripe fruit. She lives in the rainforest of the Congo basin, south of the Congo River. Bonobos are endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and are very rare. Despite being our closest living relatives, our knowledge of bonobos and their natural history is extremely limited. There are only 3 locations where it’s possible to observe them in the wild. These are the first pictures of them in the wild for maybe 20-years. I took them in Salonga National Park, DRC where the Max-Planck Society have been conducting research for more then 10-years under Dr. Gottfried Hohmann. It was a humbling and fascinating experience to spend two months in the company of these beautiful creatures in their world. This image was published in National Geographic in March 2013. @ナショナルジオグラフィック @natgeocreative #Wpph14 #conservation #ecology
