A crabeater seal grimaces at me for waking him up as I swam around his small island of ice near Palmer Station on Anvers island in Antarctica. Crabeater seals are the most abundant seal in Antarctic waters. This wonderful group of seals have specialized teeth for eating Antarctic krill, small crustaceans that are a keystone species in the polar region supporting whales, seals and penguin populations. Once this guy began to wake up I took a couple of frames and swam back to my zodiac to let him sleep. Every living organism in Antarctica depends on the sea to make a living. Krill populations are a lynchpin in this ecosystem causing growing concern that expanding krill fisheries are removing this critical source of food from species that depend on it.
