About 15 years ago, a high school student from Virginia named Ryan Speedo Green visited the @metopera on a school trip. At the time, he was trying to put his life back on track. He’d had a rough childhood, including 2 months in juvenile detention — parts of which he spent in solitary confinement. But Ryan set himself a goal. “I am going to sing at the Met,” he told one of his teachers. And last week, he did it. Ryan, now a 30-year-old bass-baritone, was basking in bravos and tossed flowers on Wednesday after singing his biggest role there yet: Colline, the poor philosopher in Puccini’s “La Bohème.” In the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ review, James R. Oestreich called Mr. Green “the real showstopper.” At 30, Ryan is still young for a bass-baritone and still working to establish himself in a tough field. But the story of his leap from solitary to opera’s grandest stage is the subject of a new book. For him, looking back at the past puts things into perspective. “If ... you asked me, ‘Where is this kid now?’” he said, “I would never tell you they probably have 2 degrees and have a wife and are living in Europe and are singing at the Metropolitan Opera.” @samuelhodgson photographed Ryan Speedo Green at the @metopera.
