WELLL let me tell ya? Without a solid foundation of body mass, I would have began cutting down for this show with little muscle tissue. This would mean a compromise in my final form and stage physique. I may reach the same weight on the final day of prep, but the COMPOSITION of this weight would be very different - this ratio plays a huge role in the musculature figure my body takes. Should I have cut my gaining phase in half, I would have been implementing a mediocre program that compromises both muscle gain AND retention (not to mention a compromise in metabolic capacity). I have found that being specific with my goals calls for specific protocols in a training program. During last year, I was working on my compound lifts (bench press, deadlift, and squat), working on accessory movements to strengthen these lifts, moderate intensity hypertrophy work, and little to no cardio. While the journey be slow in progression, and while it did result in me having to sit at a higher body fat percentage , I can say with confidence that integrating consistency and specificity in my goals worked for me.
