“It all started because of a bet. One of my close friends challenged me to compete in the Murray Marathon and that’s how I got into canoeing. Our idea of training was to do a couple of laps around this tiny little lake before going to have donuts and a hot chocolate. We had no idea what we were doing. One day we saw these guys powering around on the water and I remember thinking they must be nuts to take it so seriously. I had no idea at the time that a few years later it would be me training my backside off to qualify for Rio. It’s funny how things play out.”
