"I started swimming eight weeks after I had my leg amputated. I was diagnosed with cancer when I was two-years-old and swimming was part of my rehabilitation program. Apparently I could only swim in circles when I first started. My parents never wrapped me in cotton wool and I certainly haven’t thrown myself a pity party. Obviously at that age I didn’t really understand what was happening but I just loved being in the water and that’s all that mattered to me. That seems like just yesterday and now I’m competing at my third Paralympics. It’s pretty incredible how quickly things move though. I still remember being on my first swim team and one of the older girls spoke to me about leadership and why it’s so important to enjoy your time as a competitor. Now I’m having that same conversation with girls who look to me for advice. Getting to the top of the mountain and representing Australia is something I’m very proud of. I’ve come a long way from that little girl who used to swim in circles.” Paralympian: @elliecoleswim, 24, Swimming.
