“I didn’t know it growing up but friends and family were always making decisions and assumptions for me based on the fact I was born with one leg. To be honest, I was doing the same. I always believed running was impossible. I had the power to move, but never the belief to do it. One day I was out walking with my wife and our two dogs - Lani and Buster – and randomly just decided to try it. I didn’t make it more than a single step before my artificial leg flung off into the air and I hit the deck. Luckily my face broke my fall. When I stood back up my wife had tears of laughter streaming down her face. I collected my leg, hunted down my dogs and called it a day. I came back the next afternoon and tried it again. This time I got 10 steps before collapsing. Three months later I ran my first triathlon and in under a year I completed my first ironman race. Now, I’m competing at the Paralympics in Rio. The most important thing I’ve ever done is taking that first step and learning from the experience.”
