Photo by @andyparkinsonphoto // I captured this image during the unusually harsh winter of 2012 when I spent 6 weeks working solidly with the brown hares near my Derbyshire home. It was an incredibly challenging experience made all the worse by the inaccessible nature of the site which meant that, even in my trusty Land Rover Defender I had my work cut out to even get there safely. I was then confronted with the challenge of trying to get close to an animal which, totally unlike their more confiding mountain cousins are incredibly wary and quick to flee, all the while working in deep snow and bitingly cold conditions. In order to minimise clutter I would only ever work with one camera and one lens whilst spare batteries/memory cards and food were all crammed into my pockets. I also worked without a tripod as I’d often have to crawl for long distances and that is challenging enough whilst cradling a weighty 600mm F4, let alone trying to drag a tripod along for the ride. This image was actually captured on a day when I decided to work with my 200-400mm F4 lens as I wanted to start showing more of the habitat in which they lived. This is of course a risky strategy as without the extra reach of the 600mm I was hoping that I’d be able to get close enough. As it turned out on this day it was the hares that came to me as I’d seen this group from a distance but instead of trying to approach I just remained concealed in the bottom of a hedgerow. After a while some breeding behaviour kicked off and the female set off with two males in pursuit. Of the 360 degrees of directions that they could have chosen I was lucky that they ran straight toward where I was and when I fired off a few frames they all sat down, conveniently arranged against a beautiful backdrop.
