Puerto Merizalde is the largest settlement in the lower Naya river region, an area that has historically been a zone of guerrilla control and the target of paramilitary atrocities. Because of a on-going cease fire between leftist FARC guerrillas and the Colombian armed forces, many rural areas are experiencing calm for the first time in decades. The fact that the ceasefire has held firmly bodes very well for the possibility of a peace treaty between leftist FARC guerrillas and the Colombian state that would end over fifty years of brutal warfare. | Una escena pacifica durante el cese de fuego. Puerto Merizalde es el poblado más grande en el bajo Río Naya, una región históricamente bajo control de la guerrilla y blanco de atrocidades paramilitares.
