Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety I’m delighted to announce that my abstract image of a mute swan in threat posture, backlit by evening sunlight, has won me the inaugural title of Bird Photographer of the Year 2016. It’s undoubtedly a brave decision by the judges to award the overall winner to an abstract image, especially given that it’s not immediately obvious what the subject is, even though it’s a familiar species to a great number of people around the world. However, the subjective nature of photography is one of its great joys and competition winning images often polarise opinion. As such I would of course be delighted to hear all of your opinions on this image, favourable or otherwise, as an audience of this size is a fantastic sounding board for gauging mass opinion. For those that might be interested then what you see here is the arched wings of an adult mute swan, back-lit by the setting sun. I was sitting beneath a weir, a reservoir/lake outflow, my lens shaded from the direct sunlight whilst the swan was on the lake a few feet above. The black backdrop at the top of the frame is a distant forest in shadow whereas the black in the foreground is the shaded part of the weir, again in shadow. By setting my exposure manually I have exposed for the bright white parts of the swan, retaining important detail in all of the whites, and it is this fast exposure that allows the rest of the image to fall into dramatic underexposure. Lastly, the use of my large 600mm F4 lens has made it possible for me to throw the linear, man-made shape of the weir out of focus whilst concentrating the attention on the swan. As well as the overall winning image it also won the category called Attention to Detail. Next years’ competition is now open for entries and with a fantastic prize fund I definitely recommend that those with an interest in bird photography should consider entering http://birdpoty16.picturk.com// @andyparkinsonphoto @thephotosociety @birdpoty @swarovskioptik_nature
