Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Those of you that regularly follow my work here on Instagram will know that over the last 2-3 years I’ve been working on a photo story on mute swans. My reason for doing this was because the vast majority of my time over the last four years was being spent renovating our house, a house that we moved into last September, and as such my time for photography has been extremely limited. Nevertheless I wanted to remain photographically active during this time and I also wanted to ensure that during this extended sabbatical I was able to continue to produce work of a required standard. As such the swans seemed like the ideal story as I knew of a number of local sites where they were present and they were a species that I’d overlooked for too long. During this time I routinely checked on the local swans, dropping into their lives at key times in order to try and capture particular aspects of their life cycle such as nest building and cygnet rearing. This is another reason why I’ll always extol the virtues of working locally because even though I’ve only photographed for a couple of months each year I actually think that I’ve been able to improve the standard of my photography, I’ve become more versatile and creative with how I work and though this image is definitely not an example I have over the course of this year been able to take what I believe are my best ever images. Inevitably when working with a species for so long these are certain images, certain things that I see that I never tire of and one of these is a swan in full threat posture. This image is actually quite an old one, one that I captured before the start of this story but it still reveals what an astonishing beautiful bird the mute swan is so if it’s a bird that perhaps you’ve overlooked then it might be worth having a rethink!
