Olympic #boxing is taking on a new look. At @リオ五輪2016, there’s a revised point system and the inclusion of a number of professional fighters. But maybe the most noticeable change: the male boxers are no longer required to wear head guards. The removal of the gear, a first in more than 3 decades, is based on a counterintuitive and debatable premise — that boxers will be safer without the extra protection. The guards were added at the Los Angeles @オリンピック in 1984. But in 2013, the International Boxing Association (@aiba_official) decided to eliminate the guards for amateur male boxers in international tournaments. Several studies, including one commissioned by the association, found that the number of acute brain injuries went down when head guards weren’t used. @mjrhill photographed boxers from Mexico training earlier this week.
