A housing complex in the desert flatlands of Chihuahua, Mexico. The photographer Ewan Telford was drawn to Chihuahua, the rugged Mexican state located south of Texas and New Mexico, by its history and natural beauty. In particular, Ewan wanted to trace some of the movement of Pancho Villa -- a Mexican revolutionary herobetween Columbus, New Mexico, and the southern town of Parral, Mexico. “I was particularly keen to visit the Sierra Madre and its deep gorges,” Ewan told @nytmag. “Chihuahua has an amazing and varied terrain, with big, lonely landscapes. Some people find those parts of the state kind of hostile and a little bleak, but I respond to that. They are exactly the sorts of places I like to get lost in. When you’re traveling on your own, that kind of expanse lends itself to a certain existential bliss.” Ewan captured this desert scene in near a town called Ascension, not far from the U.S. border.
