On July 19, 1936, the steamship Manhattan set out from New York with the largest U.S. #Olympic team ever assembled. Carrying 334 of the 382 selected athletes, the ship was destined for Hamburg, where @teamusa would train in the weeks leading up to the @オリンピック. Few #Olympics are as historically significant as the 1936 Berlin Games, which were held under the watchful eye of Adolf Hitler. But before Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals, becoming one of the most decorated athletes in track and field history, @teamusa spent several days at sea. In a wireless dispatch from aboard the Manhattan, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported on a variety show, in which “an imposing array of talent was uncovered among the athletes.” 2 boxers performed dance routines, a pole vaulter crooned popular songs, a 13-year-old springboard diving prodigy gave a violin concert, 2 gymnasts yodeled, and a hurdler from California sang the blues.
