38 years ago this week, a 48-inch water pipe burst on Decatur Street in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Millions of gallons of water shot up through the asphalt like a geyser and cascaded down the sloping street. “Within minutes, that river had swallowed basements, ruined rugs and flooded living rooms in dozens of homes in the neighborhood,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported the following day. The authorities said the break had been caused by old age, a condition that afflicted a vast portion of NYC’s underground water lines, some dating back to as early as 1870. Today, the city’s water main system is a 6,800-mile-long network of pipes. Last year NYC spent more than $140 million to operate the system.
